Halloween is a holiday celebrated in much of the western world. Dressing in costumes and going door to door to ask for candy is a special event for many children. Stores' marketing of candy has helped shape what Halloween is today, and surely children are happy to receive the candy. Some children like to choose a neighborhood strategically where they do not need to walk very far between houses. Parents need to check all the candy thoroughly to make sure that it is safe; some might even end up taking a piece of their favorite candy, as it is very tempting! Some parents encourage their children to eat the candy as quickly as possible so that their teeth will not decay from being in contact with sugar for a long period of time. However, brushing teeth immediately after eating candy is probably better for children's dental heath than eating it all at once.

overcoming shyness
Are you afraid to talk to strangers ? Have you ever been nervous to speak in front of a crowd? Overcoming shyness is possible. Learning certain skills can help, and although it may seem challenging at first, these skills are not too difficult to master. Understanding that everyone wants to be accepted and liked is a good first step. Your beginning a conversation may not make you instantly popular, but if you consistently focus on helping other people feel comfortable by talking to them and smiling at them, you will notice that people will be more friendly towards you. Your making a commitment to overcoming your fears of rejection will pay off over time. If you dread to be in social situations, it is probably because of previous negative experiences. The next time you know you're going to be in a social situation, try to prepare a list of conversation topics. If you dare to go to a party without thinking ahead of time, for instance, about what you will say, you may not be able to find courage to begin a conversation. Behavioral psychologists also recommend your being aware of body language. Sitting up straight, and speaking with volume are good skills to practice and should be more inviting than looking at your shoes.
children and fear
As we mature, we have no trouble understanding that if someone disappears behind a door, they continue to exist. Babies, on the other hand, have a hard time believing that something exists if they cannot see it. Playing peek-a-boo with a baby is one way to help them learn that objects are permanent. Some children also fear discipline. Discipline can be used to help raise emotionally stable, happy children. However, inconsistent discipline has been found to be confusing to children. Not overdoing discipline and helping children understand the reasons behind the discipline by explaing it to them is important. The socializing of children requires teaching them appropriate ways of expressing strong feelings, including the greatest fear: rejection. It is natural for young children to hit or bite when they feel rejected or are angry at other children. However, when children are playing, parents or caregivers should supervise closely enough to monitor how the children are behaving and be prepared to teach them appropriate social behavior. If parents do not do this, they risk their child growing up to think that such behavior is acceptable. By age five, a child's way of dealing with fears may be unique, and their strategies for coping may vary. Although a child's fear may seem irrational to some parents, it is probably normal behavior for the child. Therefore, parents may wish to practice patience when dealing with their child's fears.
horror film
In the 1950s, some amateur filmmakers found a way to market themselves: the horror film. Scaring the audience was an easy way to make a buck. Many filmmakers were criticized for devoting little or no effort to crafting a good story, but their audience didn't seem to mind. People were satisfied with being scared. Using imaginative monsters and visual innovations, such as 3-D glasses, allowed filmmakers to create careers for themselves. In the 1990s, however, with horror films losing popularity, filmmakers needed to look for other ways of capturing an audience. They found it necessary to develop more sophisticated story lines and to have larger budgets to avoid losing money at the box office. Thanks to better story lines and more funds, horror filmmakers today have no trouble finding an audience.
Fear
Today on "The Dan Webb Show," we're talking about fear. Fear is a natural emotion that most people are able to keep under control. It has made it possible for people to protect themselves from danger since the beginning of time. Some people, however, do not deal well with negative events, and they seem to allow fear to control their lives. You might be surprised to learn about the many faces of fear, so you'll want to stay tuned to the "The Dan Webb Show."
an artificial nose
Scientists have been working to develop an artificial nose. Their nose is designed to detect accurately toxic chemicals that should not be allowed to build up in enclosed spaces. Many industries have been trying to find a way to identify quickly harmful substances. The scientists are continuing to improve the artificial nose before making it commercially available.
Trends in Grocery Stores
More and more grocery stores appear to be using aromas to increase sales. The stores attempt to lure their customers with the smell of fresh bread, fried meat, or chocolate, which tends to attract customers to certain products they had not intended to buy, and makes them more likely to spend their money in the store. The aromas can make it difficult for customers to resist buying whatever they smell. The marketing power of aromas is not downplaying. Food aromas are believed to be first used in stores in England, which were said to increase sales by 10 percent. A shopping list and a full stomach may help shoppers to be strong enough to avoid spending money that they did not intend to spend.
a study of smell and memory
A Viking museum in England decided to replicate more than just the sights and sounds of the life of the Vikings. They also created an experience.to remember with the help of smells, including smells of a leather-making shop and the salty ocean. In one study of smell and memory, 50 participants who had visited the museum were asked to describe the museum five years later. Researchers were amazed to discover that when the participants were exposed to identical smells to the ones used in the museum, they were shown to have remembered 20 percent more of the museum's contents. Since the study was published, many other museums have considered including smells in their exhibits
the science of smell
This is "Science Today,'' and I'm Michael Edson. There are many ways to say that something has a smell. We might use the words fragrance or aroma to talk about a good smell, or if we want to express that something smells bad, we use stench or stink. Dogs and many other animals are lucky (or perhaps not so lucky) to have a very keen sense of smell. Our noses are not nearly as sensitive, but they are good enough to smell a leaking gas pipe or food cooking in the kitchen. Our sense of smell also helps us to taste. If you have ever tried to enjoy a meal when you had a stuffy nose, you will probably remember that the food seemed to have tasted rather bland, like it needed to be seasoned. This hour on "Science Today," we are going to talk about the sense of smell. Stay with us.
the show's a hit
My show has been on Broadway for a month now! I'm thrilled, but I'm so tired that I feel like sleeping for a week! Having worked so hard for so long, I can't believe I'm finally a success. I never thought this would happen to me! I enjoy having the opportunity to work with such talented people. Fortunately, people are recognizing my name, but not my face, so I don't need to avoid being in crowds yet. A Hollywood studio and I are even discussing to adapt the show for the big screen! I really appreciate their helping me to follow my dreams.
Opening Night
Before Soft Step opened, Larsen went running to try and relax. All of the rehearsing did not lessen his feelings of anxiety. Having made many improvements to the show, Larsen knew that he had a good musical on his hands, but he was still nervous about having an audience. From the first moment of the show's opening, Larsen kept wondering what the audience was feeling and thinking. By the end of the show, Larsen's worrying had reached its peak. Having written the musical himself, he was his own worst critic. The audience, however, couldn't resist jumping to their feet and giving the show a 10-minute standing ovation. As hard as he tried, Larsen could not prevent the tears from coming to his eyes. He would never forget the sight of so many people applauding him and his work.
A Musician Following His Dreams
Daniel Larsen, a writer for musical theater, does not avoid working hard to reach his dreams, but then for him, working with music is play. As a youth, Larsen was interested in becoming a pharmacist like his father. He recalled having been afraid to pursue his love of music because he was not sure if he would make money. However, he reconsidered following in his father's footsteps after two unhappy years of working as a pharmacist, and no time for his music. Larsen has always enjoyed writing music, so his spending long hours composing felt more like fun than work. When he finished arranging his first serious musical, "Soft Step," he found a local theater and began rehearsing it. His big break came when someone from a New York production company saw the show and proposed putting it on Broadway. Larsen's following his dreams was about to pay off, but he had some things to learn before making it big on Broadway.
defending your home against termites
Your home is likely to be your greatest financial investment. Protecting your home from termites is often a great concern. Termites feeding on the wood in your home will eventually cause great damage, so you should find a pest control company if you suspect your home has them. It is important to make sure that the company is reputable. Take your time to select a good company carefully. You do not need to rush into finding a company since termites work slowly. After you make an appointment, someone will come inspect your home thoroughly for termites. When the termite inspector arrives, he or she will begin to check inside your house as well as outdoors. If termites are found eating the wood in your house, the inspector will treat the wood to kill the termites. Having been regularly treated for termites, your home will increase in value.
Listen to the response to a question about martial arts on an Internet message board
What is martial arts, and how can I choose the right martial arts school?
Martial arts can be described as a way to defend yourself without weapons. Types of martial arts include karate, tae-kwon-do, kung fu, and many others. Interest in martial arts seems to have increased steady over time. Practicing a martial art can be rewarding. Having learned a martial art can give a person confidence. No one is too old to benefit from practicing a martial art. Deciding on which of the many kinds of martial arts to choose will depend on what you prefer to learn. Keep in mind, however, that your learning a martial art does not mean that you will use it to fight. Some schools try to scare people into taking classes by convincing them that there are dangerous people all around them. However, it would be useless for a person to defend himself or herself with a martial art against people with guns or knives. Obviously, the best way to defend yourself is to aviod spending time in places where you may be in danger. Nevertheless, if you feel like learning some new physical skills, a martial arts class can help you do that. I recommend attending a class or two just to observe.
Without seeing a class, you will not be able to figure out if the school is right for you. For instance, some instructors advise using “circular" movements to attack or block, whereas others prefer to teach "linear" styles, using straight movements. Also, earning different belts may be easy or extremely difficult to do, depending on the school.
Human Defense
Equipped with teeth, claws, or other natural weapons, animals have little trouble finding food and defending themselves. Humans, on the other hand, would have a hard time surviving if they did not create special defenses for themselves against the weather and other animals. Even wearing clothes is a way that we protect ourselves. One way that humans have found to find food to eat and to protect themselves is by making weapons. A weapon can be used to injure an animal, another person, or to destroy a military target. Throughout history, weapons have been used to threaten others.
Inventing weapons was an important step in mankind's progress from nomads to farmers. Having begun to farm the land, people needed ways to protect their crops and animals from thieves. Also, in the Middle Ages, the building of castles necessitated to develop new weapons to help defend the castles. Today there is a constant race to improve military weapons. This has resulted in the development of the nuclear bomb, which has been considered too powerful to be employed in any modern wars since World War II.
Countries that possess nuclear weapons are not prepared to use them because they do not want to risk hurting themselves as well. The world community closely monitors each country's decision to produce nuclear weapons and strongly encourages all countries to destroy them. Hopefully, we can avoid using them at all in future conflicts.
Animal Defense
Some common ways for animals to defend themselves are hibernation, camouflage, mimicry, and migration. Hibernating, or sleeping through the winter, is one way some animals defend themselves against starvation. These animals spend the warm months gathering food, and survive the cold months by sleeping when food is unavailable. Having camouflage, or blending in with their surroundings, is one way that some animals keep from being eaten. Camouflage also allows some animals to remain invisible while hunting. Some animals need to imitate, or mimic, other animals. These animals have evolved to look like other animals to avoid being eaten or to be better hunters. Finally, many animals that cannot endure living in the cold escape freezing temperatures during the winter by moving to a warmer place.
A TV Show on Survival
Coming this week on Survival:
Animals are able to defend themselves in some amazing ways. Animals continue to survive because they are naturally equipped to protect themselves. Humans are not. Without weapons, it probably would have been impossible for humans to have survived to this day. First, humans had sticks and stones; then they went on to develop gunpowder, then nuclear bombs. You'll be amazed to discover the awe-inspiring ways in which animals—and humans— defend themselves. You won't want to miss it, this week on Survival.
